On Oct. 8th, Sun and TI jointly announced what they called world's
first "workstation-on-chip."
Here are some highlights regarding this new chip, named "microSPARC":
- Design-to-production in 18 months.
- Worked closely with Mentor Graphics for design optimization
- Less than 1 million transistors
- Replace all 29 chips that comprise the heart of their low end
workstation
- CMOS with less than 4 watts of power dissipation
- 6K on-chip cache: 4K for instruction and 2K for data
- Can address up to 128MB of RAM
- 20 to 23 SPECint92, 15 to 18 SPECfp92, 35 to 40 Dhrystone MIPS and
4.3 MFLOPS
- $179 per chip for quantity 10,000 units
- Sample available now; volume shipment scheduled for December
- Also known as "Tsunami"
- Sun and TI positioned the chip against 486DX-50 with better price
($179 vs $477) and better performance (47 MIPS vs 40 MIPS)
- Target: high end PC, notebook and X terminal
It is estimated that Sun will announce on Nov. 10th two new entry
level workstation based on MicroSPARC. This is what we know today.
- 2 models will be available: SPARCstation LCX and LCC
- One model will break the $5000 price barrier for color workstation
- Basic configuration
15" SVGA color monitor
16 MB
207 MB hard disk
8-bit audio with internal speaker
Option: 424Mb internal hard disk, 16" 1152X900 colro monitor, 19"
1280X1024 color monitor
- up to 96 MB of memory
- up to 424 MB internal hard disk
Sun makes it clear that it is the high end PC market they are going
after. The thread to HP is unclear at this time but there is one thing
for sure SPARCstation LCX abd LCC will reset the price/performance
benchmark for entry level workstation.
